EPWORTH CENTRE FOR BARIATRIC SURGERY – PROFILE
Bariatric (Obesity) Surgery has developed from the early open operations of Jejuno-Ileal Bypass and Gastric Stapling (HGR) to the present mainly Laparoscopic (Key Hole) Obesity Surgical procedures, such as Laparoscopic Gastric Banding (LAGB), Laparoscopic Roux en Y Bypass (LRYGB) and Bilio-Pancreatic Bypass (BPD + DS)
All these procedures are performed by surgeons attending the Epworth Centre for Bariatric Surgery and are done after assessment of the individual patient’s requirements.
As part of this assessment the Centre requires patients to be fully informed of the operative procedures, including complications and post-operative care prior to surgery. The patient is also required to be assessed by a specialist physician and psychiatrist and is given dietitic and exercise information during their hospital stay.
Follow-up requires regular attendance for assessment of weight loss, dietary intake, long term nutritional effects of their operative procedure.
